Big thanks to the ESS community! We collected over 60 pounds of Halloween candy to donate to Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit sending care packages to U.S. service members abroad. Thank you to all students and families that participated in the candy drive, and thanks to all who sent in a note of appreciation to be included in a future care package to a service member. Sugar consumption is high around Halloween and donating to this cause was a nice way to share the bounty and to reduce our community’s sugar intake. Thanks again, ESS, for being so generous.

In English: Donate Your Candy!!
During November 2nd through November 6th students may drop off individually wrapped candy/chocolate to the front office for donation to Operation Gratitude, a national nonprofit that sends care packages to U.S. troops serving abroad.
Why this service project? Well, Halloween is Saturday and those families participating may get a lot of candy while out and about trick-or-treating. With an abundance of treats, this is a great opportunity to pass along some of those treats to service members far away who would appreciate a treat that reminds them of home. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce the amount of sugar consumed after this holiday for the students (and maybe other family members, too!)
WHAT: Candy donation
FOR: Operation Gratitude to send to troops
WHY: Volunteer service project, helps students reduce amount of candy and sugar consumed
WHEN: November 2-6 (Monday thru Friday) during school hours
HOW: Go to the front office and drop off your bags of candy. There will be a container clearly labeled for the candy donations. You’re welcome to include a note to be included in a care package to a troop member, if you wish.
Some additional notes:
The ESS PTA Wellness Committee is partnering with a local Takoma Park dentist who is participating in the program and will be accepting the donations.
