Resolution on School Food Passes MCCPTA

At the March PTA meeting those in attendance were asked to voice either a yay or nay on a MCCPTA (MoCo Council of PTAs) resolution that was headed to the MCCPTA delegate’s assembly on March 22. Reporting here that the resolution passed at the delegate’s meeting.

Big thanks to the ESS PTA board for including the resolution discussion on the March agenda and sending delegates to the MCCPTA meeting. Here’s a summary (the final text of the resolution is not yet available):

The MCCPTA resolution requests that MCPS transition to scratch-cooking in its central facility or in schools, reduce sugar in school foods, offer only healthy a la carte items in elementary schools, remove items from school vending machines that do not meet the USDA’s Smart Snacks in Schools standards and remove all synthetic dyes from school foods. It also asks for MCPS to put salad bars in all schools, where feasible.

As for next steps the Health and Safety Committee of the MCCPTA will be communicating to MCPS the consensus reached on these items and begin to work on these requests.
